Museum Tours and Travel

Visitors to the museum are encouraged to learn about the contributions and sacrifices made by African Americans from West Virginia, to the social, political and economic developments of the United States of America. Heritage Towers takes pride in elevating the unique accomplishments of black people from the state that made indelible marks in American history.

The context in which Black history and education is promoted by the Heritage Towers, is predicated on the principle of expanding knowledge through discussions and frequent exposure to developments and issues, pertaining to African-Americans in the society. Hence, our slogan, “Every Month is Black History Month.” For this reason, Heritage Towers, celebrates and pays special tribute to a time-honored American tradition known as, Black History Month which is celebrated nationally in February.

Our museum is a dual purpose facility promoting Heritage Towers’ programming in education and economic development initiatives.

Starting on the West Virginia Black Heritage Trail, Heritage Tours offers visitors a spectacular opportunity to experience West Virginia’s rich history in the greater Charleston Metro and Kanawha Valley historic districts. The African-American Heritage tour of Kanawha Valley spans the Kanawha River with stops at Booker T. Washington’s boyhood home in Malden and West Virginia Colored Institute, now West Virginia State University (WVSU,) whose campus in Institute, was previously the site of a plantation in the 19th century.

African-American historic sites to be visited on the tour are Garnett High School and “The Block”–an area that was home to some prominent African-Americans and businesses in Charleston. Get on board and join Heritage Tours for an enriching experience and appreciate the contributions of African-Americans from West Virginia.
